Melissa Ewey Johnson is a writer and editor in New York City.

She got her start in the magazine business as an assistant editor at EbonyMan magazine in Chicago. After EbonyMan ceased publication, Melissa worked as an assistant editor at Ebony magazine, the national monthly celebrity and lifestyle magazine for African-Americans. There, Melissa was the editor of the annual Eligible Bachelors feature and wrote several articles, including a cover story on Grammy-winner Lauryn Hill, as well as features on hip-hop and R&B artists such as Usher, LL Cool J and Monica.
She then moved to Birmingham, Alabama to work as an assistant editor at Cooking Light, the nation’s most widely circulated epicurean magazine. She co-edited the front-of-book section “First Light”, edited health, travel and fitness articles, and wrote several food features. Additionally, she served for two years as the health and fitness representative on the Cooking Light Cruise, an annual partnership with Norwegian Cruise Lines that features specially designed programming and events for Cooking Light readers. Melissa was also a senior associate editor at Time Inc. in the strategic communications division, where she edited publications for clients including Unilever, Nestle and McDonald's.
Melissa has worked as a temporary on-site editor at Fitness and Weight Watchers magazines. As a writer, her articles have appeared in Cooking Light, Essence, Fitness, Shop Smart, Heart & Soul, Honey, Black Issues Book Review, Real Health, msn.com, essence.com, sonicnet.com and other publications. She is a contributing writer for the Eyejammie Encyclopedia of Hip-Hop, to be published in 2008, and is the author of the forthcoming Halle Berry: A Biography (Greenwood Press). Melissa has served as a ghostwriter and editor on several book projects and blogs and is a contributing writer for Epikouria, a quarterly culinary magazine based in Greece. She is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
